Where is your favourite pub or restaurant ?
Couldn’t pin you down to one – I would say I adore The Weighbridge between Avening and Nailsworth for it’s famous 2-in-1 pies (half steak and mushroom and half cauliflower cheese with the best pastry top ever!!) I worked there as a teenager when it was the pub to go to- we all used to pile down there and be teenage drunk and disorderly and at Christmas you’d come back from Uni for Xmas break and wouldn’t be able to move in there it was so packed!! Now it’s a bit more of a restaurant -people travel from far and wide for a 2 in 1 but I still have a fierce loyalty to it as do most 40-60 year olds who grew up around the area I’d say.
You can’t beat The Old Lodge or The Black Horse on Minch Common – very different – Lodge is more upmarket and black horse more of a traditional pub – but the views and sun set from the latter you can’t beat and being up on the common is very special – I spent yesterday at both with a walk in between!
Restaurants in Stroud – I love The Corner House – great food and cocktails – no view but you can kid yourself you’re in Bristol or London -nice atmosphere. And if you want friendly, great food with kids – the Italian Sorrentos every time!!
What do you love about the area?
I like the fact Stroud is a very individual and independent town. Very eclectic really – everybody muddles along together – it’s very arty – mother earth spiritual types all mixed in with your horsey high society set and your common as muck plebs!!- I don’t think you can write it quite like that but do you get my meaning?!! – anybody goes – North Cotswolds I think can be a bit snooty – not Stroud it welcomes one and all!!
Where is the best place to relax in the area?
Well the common in Minch, Selsley or Rodborough on a sunny day or for a walk and a drink ( see question 1) Rococco Gardens in Painswick, Woodchester Mansion for walks. Nailsworth for a meander around the shops and for coffee and lunch
What do you think is the best view in the area?
From my garden in Selsley West!!! – can’t beat it – tiny cottage but with best view and having worked as an estate agent for 16 years now- haven’t and wouldn’t move as a result!! But there are amazing views in every direction!
How would you spend a ‘perfect day’ in the area?
All of the above – walking, stopping and drinking in pubs whilst eating and taking in the views – and then perhaps treat myself to an outfit in Honey Trap and a mooch in Tonic, Domestic Science and Woodcock & Cavendish- perhaps finished off with a 2-in-1 Pie!!!!!!

Nailsworth is an attractive and vibrant Market Town, near Stroud.
The delightful Market Town is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is located at the south-western edge of the Cotswolds in South Gloucestershire.
Known for its wool milling history, it’s been kept alive by many of the mills turning into what are now restaurants, museums and arts and crafts shops. The town is filled with a combination of red-brick and Cotswold stone architecture.
Nailsworth has a small supermarket, delicatessens – including the acclaimed Williams Kitchen fish market and food hall – plus a wonderfully diverse selection of fashionable boutiques and shops, salons, antiques and furniture shops and galleries for local craftspeople. The annual Nailsworth Festival, with its varied programme of music, comedy and dance, is not to be missed. The town also offers a post office, butchers, grocery shops, doctors, dentists and a public library.
Approximately 4 miles away is Stroud offering several good secondary schools, further food, grocery and clothes shopping; further cafes, restaurants and bars; leisure activities including bowling, a cinema, leisure centre with a lido and tennis courts. Stroud also offers several good secondary schools including a boy’s and a girl’s grammar school.
Surrounded by stunning countryside, Nailsworth is well placed for country walks, wildlife exploration and daily strolls. For hillwalking enthusiasts head to Cotswold Way, the Monarch’s Way or the Wysis Way. Nearby Woodchester Mansion, a 19th century gothic mansion standing in National Trust owned Woodchester Park, attracts many visitors.
Along Bath Road, there are a variety of independent local shops. You’ll find clothing stores, a book shop, a gift shop and more. Nearby there’s also The Village Inn, the local pub that offers a warm welcome and for those looking to order or collect food for the night, both a Fish and Chips and a Chinese takeaway.
The Nailsworth Festival in May is a celebration of music, poetry, drama and comedy. Great for the whole family, there are activities held around the town to celebrate the festival.
Close to Stroud, there are good transport links. It only takes around 90 minutes to reach London Paddington by train and Bath and Bristol are only about 35 minutes by car from Nailsworth, with Cirencester, Cheltenham and Gloucester also easily commutable.
