Chippenham is surrounded by beautiful countryside with the Marlborough Downs to the east and the beautiful southern Cotswolds to the north and west and Salisbury Plains to the southeast.
The well located and sought after Market Town is believed to have had some form of settlement since before the Roman times and the remains of Romano-British settlements are still visible within the town today. Chippenham is also famous for its railway arches built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel along with other historic buildings.
Chippenham is a flourishing and lively town with a thriving town centre and a number of out-of-town shopping areas. The “Buttercross” which was originally erected in 1570 stands as the centre-piece of the pedestrianised area of the town centre where markets are held weekly on a Friday and Saturday with a variety of traditional and modern stalls. A Farmers Market where locally produced foods can be purchased is also held fortnightly.
The town has a good selection of schools for all ages in and around Chippenham including the Chippenham campus of Wiltshire College.
The Yelde Hall is one of the very few remaining Mediaeval timber framed buildings in the town. Built around 1450, it housed the Town Museum until 2000 when it had outgrown the Hall and moved to the former Magistrates Court in the Market Place.
Chippenham boasts a broad range of parks, open spaces and play areas including an 18 hole Golf Course and Leisure Centre. Monkton Park is a beautiful large open space in the centre of Chippenham with a children’s play area and multi-use games area, John Coles Park attracts many visitors with its circular walk through its 350 mature trees a delight in all seasons, the Bandstand is an ideal picnic spot where it hosts a selection of Sunday afternoon concerts from May through to September and the splash-pad is a popular attraction for those under the age of 12. The park also offers a community garden, multi-use games area, bowls pavilion and has tennis courts for hire, there’s something for everybody. There are a number of children’s parks throughout the town, 7 allotment sites across the town and the North Wiltshire Rivers Cycle route offers cycling, walking and jogging between Chippenham and Calne.
From fine dining to relaxed cafes and pubs, there is plenty to choose from in and around Chippenham, the nearby Lucknam Park Hotel and Spa is the perfect place to enjoy Michelin Star dining and The Bybrook a 14th Century Manor House offers seasonal dishes and locally sourced ingredients along with an abundance of country pubs.
The town expanded in the 1800s with the arrival of The Great Western Railway which promoted the growth of industry within the area. Today there’s direct mainline access to London Paddington in just over an hour and ten minutes. There are also good bus routes and the M4 motorway giving easy access to Bristol, Bath and Swindon, ensuring Chippenham remains a popular place to live.
